Help WRA find a new Boathouse. As of January 1, 2010, the Wichita Rowing Association longer will row from the BG facilities due to last summers' hailstorm damage to BG facilities. WRA appreciates the eight years that BG has supported the rowing community by offering a riverfront facility for WRA high school rowing programs, Learn to Row classes, boat and equipment storage, indoor erg practices and meeting rooms for various WRA club activities. Help us in our quest for a new riverfront facility. In the meantime for 2010, WRA will continue to row on the Little Arkansas River, storing our shells at the Ralph Wulz Tennis Center and staging from the dock next to the fenced in handball court at the west end. Look for the Blue WRA banner and of course the rowers on the Little Arkansas River seven days a week in 2010.

p.s. If you have riverfront property or boathouse ideas, feel free to come our monthly WRA board meetings or contact Jim Schmidt-Boathouse Committee Chairman schmidthousefive@sbcglobal.net or 993-4334 for details.

20th Annual Frostbite Regatta
November 6th, 2011

Plans are already underway for the 20th Annual Frostbite Regatta set for November 6, 2011 on the Little Arkansas River. There were over 600 athletes last year; this year should only be bigger and better. Jay Pfeiffer has voluteered as the 2011 regatta chairperson and with Don Wadsworth are coordinating this year's event. If you know of any organization or business, which may be interested in being a sponsor, please get that information to Jay at 316-264-3001 so that they may contact them.

Volunteers are also needed to help the day of the race to help with packets, start and finish lines, bridges, etc. (as well as the pasta dinner the night before). Even if you have not helped with a regatta before, it's a lot of fun (even if you have to keep some sense of humor about the weather). Talk with Jim Schmidt-993-4334 about adding your name to the list of volunteers.

High School Program
Rowing on the Little Arkansas River

This summer is continueing to see many new faces as well as the returning rowers from the spring and winter quarters. With erg races and a spring regatta experience and with athletes are coming from the Learn to Row program, the young team is getting their water legs and advancing to a faster more competitive crew.

This summer, the seasoned athletes are looking towards the Kansas Sunflower games of 400 meters of fast rowing, July 9, 2010 in Topeka at Lake Shawnee with athletes from KSU, KU, KCRC and others.

Though the club and team do not have a permanent boathouse since January and with the city allowing some last minute winter boat storage, the summer crews are able to have fun rowing every boat available, mixing different athlete combinations with returning summer rowers from multiple schools. The High School Team use the boats and equipment stored at the converted boat storage at the Ralph Wulz Tennis Center.

By November, the athletes will have put countless mile in the water and be ready for the fall regatta season of 2010 on their home turf and ready to row on the Arkansas river for a great fall program.

The WRA high school rowing team meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 7:30 a.m. There is still plenty of room for interested kids. Please contact Brian Adamson at 652-8833 or adamson.email@gmail.com if you know of anyone who may want to join.
